What is [ui!] UrbanPulse?

[ui!] UrbanPulse is our flagship product. It is an open smart city platform for local authorities that brings all your raw data together into one place. It transforms your data into smart data and creates actionable insights and valuable information. Therefore, it breaks through vendor lock-in and data siloes.

Over 150 cities around the world use [ui!] UrbanPulse to bring together and manage real time data from diverse systems and devices. Examples include: the City of Paramatta managing a major development with environmental sensors reporting impacts and engaging local residents, the City of Darmstadt using traffic data and environmental sensors to manage and improve air quality, Oxfordshire County Council to show real time mobility so residents can make better transport choices.

The [ui!] UrbanPulse design is based on a layered, distributed software architecture and is built for highly scalable cloud infrastructure. It provides a seamless scalability that previously was only available for very large, expensive clustered systems.

Key features include:

  • scalable cloud-based SaaS based on Microsoft Azure as standard
  • supports open urban platform standards (DIN 91357)
  • end-to-end security at multiple levels (access management, authentication, data encryption)
  • library of over 130 device and system connectors (APIs) to common Internet of Things (IoT) devices in the market
  • big data and streaming analytics stack based on Kafka and Spark. Data analytics can be provided embedded for high performance scenarios or as a service
  • data exploration and prototyping with Jupyter Notebooks and all Python ML Libraries
  • flexible data storage, UrbanPulse takes advantage of best available technologies (ElasticSearch, Azure DataLakes, SQL, CosmosDB, PostgresSQL, TableStorage, etc.)
  • OpenAPI support based on Swagger

[ui!] UrbanPulse uses Microsoft’s Azure cloud services for hosting including specific components such as Microsoft TableStore, SQL servers, ServiceBus, Azure Virtual Machines and Event Hub. [ui!] UrbanPulse also supports alternative Cloud infrastructure as a service (IaaS) providers such as Amazon Web Services and SAP Cloud and can support on premise hosting or hybrid configurations. [ui!] UrbanPulse provides interfaces to several communication standards, making it simple and economical to integrate and share new sources of real-time information and sensor systems.

The open architecture is aligned to DIN SPEC 91357 (the German standard based on our deliverable for the European Innovation Partnership on Smart Cities and Communities urban platform initiative).

Our business model and solutions are vendor agnostic and we can integrate with any data source which is made available via a secured API.
